Our masterclasses complement Free Wheeling, offering 2.5 hours of hands-on learning and structured teaching for intermediate potters. These intensive sessions focus on specific techniques to build confidence and refine your practice. More details on each session can be found in the table below.

All masterclasses cost £70 for 2.5 hours. All materials included and you can keep what you wish. We ask that if you throw a lot of stuff, that you be sure to book in to turn them!

Goldilocks Cylinders | To refine cylinder-throwing skills by exploring how techniques adapt to different scales, from small to large forms. | 200g - 2000g |
Trimming | Gain confidence in trimming with a focus on tap centering, achieving the right weight, footrings, considering the relationship between the foot/lip, the inside/outside — and how this impacts the character of the pot. | Starting with bowls c.800g. We will throw them for you to then turn |
Surface decoration: Greenware & Bisque | Explore surface decoration techniques on greenware and bisque, focusing on texture, slips, oxides and glaze application. | All pots supplied |
Closed forms* | Focus on collaring in to close a form, a great technique for creating lidded jars. You should be confident in the 3 pull technique, as it’s important not to tire out the clay. | Starting with 650g+. You will have a closed form to turn also. |
Shaping* | Once confident in pulling a cylinder in 3 pulls, this workshop introduces; bellying, collaring, RIBS!, learning where to leave clay. | 1000g |
Scale* | To refine techniques for throwing larger pieces, focusing on scale, controlling force and direction, and avoiding overworking the clay. | Starting at 1.7kg working up to 3kg+ |
For masterclasses marked with *, it is recommended that you are confident in the 3-pull technique and achieving height in your forms, as we will build on these skills to explore advanced methods and techniques. Flow and Golidlocks cylinders could be a good place to start.
